June 2, 2017: Kami Gray swats a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to power Rainier to a 3-2 win over Dayton in the OSAA 3A state title game. Jadyn Crape and Rylee O’Brien both had two hits for the Columbians, who won their fourth state title in five years.

• May 31, 2003: A day after taking home the Class B state title in the discus, Wahkiakum’s Beth Frink makes it a double in Cheney, starting her day in the shot put finals with a 41-foot, 3/4-inch huck that nobody can come within 3 feet of the rest of the day.

  “I wanted to go in there and let everyone know I was there,” Frink said of her first (and winning) attempt.

  Elsewhere around the oval at EWU, Ilwaco’s Nate Appel set both a meet record and a school record when he won the title in the 2A boy’s 800 meters with a time of 1:54.30, and Kalama’s Ryan Scott won the 1A javelin crown with a 185-foot, 1-inch throw.

• May 30, 1992: Naselle’s Tracy Elliott brings home the area’s only individual state title on the second day of the Class B State track meet in East Wenatchee, taking the crown in the girls 300-meter hurdles in 46.4 seconds.
  The victory was a bright end to the meet for Elliott, who earlier had led the 100-meter hurdles up until she clipped the penultimate hurdle, and had to settle for sixth.

  
  “She was disappointed, and you could tell,” Naselle coach Steve Tolva said. “Because in the 300 hurdles, nobody even came close to her.

The WIAA and OSAA state track and field championships began on Thursday in Tacoma, Yakima and Eugene.

Blast Zone Media will have photo galleries each day from the 3A/2A Championships at Mount Tahoma High School in addition to coverage from all three final sites.

With two local State champions already on the board, it’s fixing to be a heavy medal weekend for BZM area athletes.

• May 29, 2010: After rain knocks out the first day of the 4A state softball tournament, Kelso rolls through a marathon one-day slate, winning four games in a little under 12 hours — capped by a 2-1 win in eight innings over Heritage — to take home the championship. Karina Paalova struck out 11 in a complete game — her second 11-strikeout complete game of the day. Brittany Sanders, who hit a go-ahead two-run homer in Kelso’s 3-1 semifinal win over Inglemoor, sent the Hilanders to the title with a one-out walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth vs. Heritage.

Bob Klein took home the title in the shot put (53 feet, 10 inches) and also placed third in the discus (147 feet, 5 inches) and fourth in the pole vault (13 feet).

• May. 26, 1984: Toutle Lake wins the team title in the first B girls track and field state meet, held in Wenatchee. Katrina Berry “turned in an all-world performance,” winning the 100-meter dash and the 400 meters while also running the anchor leg for Toutle’s winning 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams. The Ducks narrowly beat out second-place Wahkiakum, who got first-place finishes from Michelle Thomas in both hurdles races.

This Day In History

• May 25, 1984: Kelso’s Joe Martin goes from eighth place to first in the final lap to win the 2A State title 1,600 meters in 4:15.9, becoming the Hilanders’ first ever individual state champion. Kelso’s 400-meter relay team of Tom Napier, Greg Mitchell, Scott Radcliffe and Dean Kenaston — which came in with the sixth-best time in the state — also won a title, setting the tone for the Hilanders to seal the team title the next day.

  R.A. Long’s Chris Nolden also came away a winner in Tacoma, taking the title in the 400.

  Out in Wenatchee, Toledo’s Scott Bickar only qualified for the finals in the shot put by an inch, but turned around to win the whole thing in the 1A finals.

  Castle Rock, the 1983 team champions, is disqualified from the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 400-meter relay, just about ending its hopes to repeat.

• May 24, 2008: Toutle Lake caps a surprising run through the 2B state bracket to bring home its third state title in four years with a 2-1 win over Adna.

  The Ducks, who went to Yakima with a 13-10 record after finishing fourth at the district tournament, got seven innings of two-hit ball from Rachel Dahlman in the circle. She also factored into both of TL’s runs, singling home Amanda Cox and scoring on Lacey Hoffmann’s go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth.

  “Going into State, it seemed like everybody was talking up the other three teams from our district,” first-year TL coach Mark Benson said. “I think we got overlooked. But it worked out.”

• May 23, 2008: Taking the mound in a Kelso uniform for the final time, Trevor May goes out with a bang, striking out 12 and allowing just one run on three hits in a 5-1 win over Meadowdale in the 3A state semifinals at Safeco Field. After the Hilanders fell behind on a squeeze set up by a botched double play, the Mavericks returned the favor and then some, gifting Kelso four runs on wild pitches and errors in the bottom of the third. That was plenty for May, who got through the final five innings on 70 pitches.

Longview Schools place additional staff on paid leave

The Longview School District placed three more staff members on paid leave Friday in response to new details in the ongoing investigation into an alleged cover-up of sexual misconduct and hazing at Mark Morris High School.

New court documents show that Superintendent Karen Cloninger used intimidation and threats of retaliation in an effort to silence school district employees and students from talking about the alleged incidents involving the Mark Morris boys basketball team.

Cloninger was arrested Thursday on three counts related to the cover up, including tampering with a witness, which. is a felony. Cloninger was released from jail on $5,000 bail following her arraignment on Friday, and her attorney says she plans to fight the charges.

• May 22, 2010: The R.A. Long baseball team punches its ticket to the state semifinals for the first time in 15 years with a long and dramatic day in Chehalis, coming back to beat Ellensburg 9-8 before downing Clarkston 7-3. The Jacks fell behind 7-1 early to Ellensburg and 7-4 going into the final inning, but got a two-run homer from Levi Welch and a two-out, three-run bomb by Tanner Chamberlain — his second of the game — to pull ahead.

  “If you look at our lineup, there’s no person who stands out, but my, what a big performance he had tonight,” said RAL coach Jason Castro.
  

  The Lumberjacks took that momentum into the second game, plating four runs in the first inning vs. Clarkston. Then it started raining, and the Jacks lost all control on the hill, until Tyler Weaver came up with 3 1/3 innings of clutch relief to seal the win.

Longview School District Chief Arrested

The ongoing saga involving alleged sexual harassment and hazing with the Mark Morris boys basketball team took another turn Thursday when Longview Police arrested Karen Clonginer, the Superintendent of the Longview School District.

Clonginer was booked on charges related to an attempt to cover up the misconduct at Mark Morris. Those charges include tampering with a witness, failure to report, and obstructing a law enforcement officer. Tampering with a witness is a felony.

A press release by Longview Police stated their intention to also bring charges against Andrew Schoonover, executive director of student services for Longview Schools for his alleged involvement in the coverup as well. However, Schoonover as not booked into jail on Thursday.

Two MM basketball players were previously arrested for their alleged roles in the hazing and assaults and several other players were listed as participants in court documents.

Duvall had set the previous meet record the season before, at 14 feet, 3 inches.

• May 19, 2021: With the return from COVID-19 condensing the NWAC schedule from a school year down to five months, winter and spring seasons are run simultaneously, leading to a very busy day for LCC’s Karsyn Zaragoza and Kaylee Barnum, who are on both the volleyball and softball teams. The two started their day at Tam O’Shanter Park, helping lead the Red Devils to a 9-4 win over Highline in the first game of a doubleheader. In the third inning of the second game — LCC would go on to win 12-0 — Zaragoza and Barnum packed up their gear, switched uniforms, drove across the river to get to Myklebust Gymnasium, and took the court for the volleyball team’s sweep of Tacoma.

  Zaragoza finishes her day with two hits, an RBI, a run scored, 11 digs, and 16 assists. For her part, Barnum logs a hit and a pair of walks, drives in a run, scores two more, and adds two kills and four digs.

• May 17, 1984: Wes Glaze gives up just a pair of walks and punches out six in a no-hitter, as Rainier rolls to a 5-0 win over Astoria to open a Cowapa League double-header. Glaze also drove a pair of runs on two singles. Matt Peerboom boomed a home run in the bottom of the third inning, then went on to go 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the Columbians’ 9-6 win in the nightcap.

Attention ballplayers:

The second and final round of tryouts for Rural Baseball Inc is…. TODAY.

Players between the ages of 15-19 can spike up and show what they’ve got at the open tryout for a spot on the roster for the 2026 summer season. Rural Baseball Inc is entering its 13th year of operation and is in search of the next crop of local talent to keep the merry going round all summer (or at least until the games are over).

If your high school team is still playing — GREAT! — we’ll be sure to take it easy on you this one time and send you back home healthy for the rest of the playoff run.

Players selected will play 30-40 games in regional locations such as Port Angeles, Yakima, and Portland, while receiving instruction from a coaching staff with experience at the high school, travel and college levels.

The RBI tryout will be held Sunday, May 17, 5 p.m., on Graham Field at Castle Rock High School. Rain or shine.

This Day In History

• May 16, 2007: The Castle Rock softball team goes 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, but Lacey Seidl comes through with the one needed hit, drilling an RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning in the Rockets’ 2-1 win over La Center in the semifinals of the 1A district tournament.
  

  “Our team just keeps going,” Seidl said. “Things usually turn out for the best.”
  

  Christine Madsen was nails in the circle for CR — which advanced to the district championship for the first time since 1996 — striking out nine and allowing just one unearned run when the Rockets made two errors in the field on an innocuous sacrifice bunt. Castle Rock got the run back in the third when Seidl walked, went to second on a sacrifice, stole third and came home on a wild pitch.

• May 15, 1984: Hoquiam tags John Morrill for three runs in the first inning, but the junior bounces back to shut the Grizzlies out the rest of the way and lead the Mark Morris baseball team to a 5-3 win in a Class AA regional semifinal.
  

  “He’s just a battler,” MM coach Stu Marshlain said. “He doesn’t quit.”
  

  The MM bats did their job early as well, tying the game up with a three-spot in the second and pulling ahead with two more runs in the third. Morrill helped start both rallies with singles, and Steve Plampin had the big knock in the third with a 2-RBI double.
