Naselle batter Jacob Lindstrom leans back to avoid a high-and-tight pitch that nearly clipped him during a WIAA 1B State Semifinal matchup against Liberty Christian on Friday, May 30, at Archer Field in Selah. Despite the pitch’s location, it was called a strike in what became a 4–2 loss for Naselle. The Comets went on to place fourth in the tournament. / Photos by Skyler Smith for Blast Zone Media

High School Baseball

SELAH — The Comets managed to get back to where they wanted to be for the final weekend of the high school baseball season, but their finish in the 1B State Tournament left them wishing on a shooting star for a do-over. Naselle wound up dropping back-to-back games at Archer Field in the final four last weekend, and settled for fourth place it the tournament.

Naselle lost 4-2 to Liberty Christian in the semifinals on Friday, and then fell 3-1 to Almira-Coulee-Hartline in the third place game on Saturday.

Since the Covid-era, the Comets have not placed lower than fourth in the state tournament. And they’ve won the whole darn thing twice.

But it’s those lofty accomplishments in recent years that left Naselle feeling disappointed at season’s end, despite being the final baseball team in the area with games on the schedule last week.

“We competed. I felt like we had a good game plan,” Naselle head coach Randy Lindstrom said. “We pitched well, but just couldn’t get the timely hits we needed. But it was the errors that really killed us.”
