CATHLAMET – Wahkiakum’s Bailey McKinley heard somebody from the Naselle side of the house tell her not to miss. So, when she ripped the net in front of the Comets’ bench in the second quarter of a 1B District IV playoff game, she whirled around to the visiting crowd and gave the entire town an emphatic suggestion to ‘Shhhhhhhhh!”
While the motion may have been slightly misdirected, leaving many tender hearted Naselle fans wondering what they’d done to come under fire, it also served as a rallying cry for the Mules. And in the end, Wahkiakum got to be as loud as it wanted to be after a 50-37 victory at home over their rivals from the other side of Km Mountain.
The energy in the gym at Wah-Ki-Hi was immaculate for the postseason rendition of the traditional Ocean Beach rivalry game. With two towns, two mascots in full regalia and a full band on a courtside stage in the house for a girls/boys playoff doubleheader between Wahkiakum and Naselle, it’s safe to say that’s about as loud as The Barn has been in quite some time.
“Our bench was really good in this game,” Wahkiakum coach Ross Lofstrum said after ducking outside for an interview at halftime of the boys’ game. “We’ve been working on that, getting them a little more excited, and they were kind of working back and forth with the crowd… It’s really fun in there right now.”
