YAKIMA – On a night when your leading scorer drops in 30 points, including a long range buzzer beater before halftime, a breakaway dunk and everything in between, it might seem strange for defense to be the story of the game. Such is the life of a Mark Morris Monarch.
After surrendering 23 points in the first quarter in a loser-out game against Sequim in the round-of-12 at the 2A State Tournament, Wednesday, the Monarchs decided they didn’t want to go home early without getting to experience a fourth rendezvous with their crosstown rivals. So Mark Morris tightened up when it came to preventing baskets in order to spark a 69-59 win over the Wolves at the SunDome.
But in order to earn another date with R.A. Long, the Monarchs had to overcome a 12 point deficit in the first half, and then had to claw back from 11 down in the second half, which is a dangerous recipe in an elimination game.
Was the Mark Morris boys basketball team simply overlooking Sequim with another crack at the Lumberjacks on deck? Sources say no.
