BAKAMUS GYMNASIUM – If you’re hoping to learn who was the hero for the Monarchs in their 71-57 win over Ridgefield in the 2A District IV Tournament semifinals on Tuesday, I’ve got bad news for you. The Mark Morris boys basketball team was in full blown cooperative mode against the Spudders, with four players reaching double figures in the scoring column and even more Monarchs finding a way to make major contributions along the way.
The victory advances the Monarchs back to the District championship game where they’ll attempt to defend last year’s title against R.A. Long in Round III of Longview’s Civil War. But we’ll get to that a little bit later. For now, there’s a bunch of boys in baby blue who deserve some attention if they’ve haven’t managed to grab yours already.
The semifinal affair matched the Monarchs up against one of only two teams they’ve lost to this season. Mark Morris lost to the Spuds 58-53 back on Dec. 17, but put together a better effort five weeks later with a 73-61 victory at home in the rematch. The semifinal, played back on the warm confines of Ted M. Natt Court, was much more similar to the second game of the series and proved the Monarch are far from a one-trick pony.
“Huge game. It meant a lot to all of us. We’ve got 10 seniors, so just to be able to put on a good performance to leave a good taste in our mouth from playing on this court,” Mark Morris senior Dalton Stevens said. We’ve got a lot of time spent here and I’m glad for all of our guys. It’s a good win.”
