A group of anonymous philosophers in 4-4 time once noted that when you meet the new boss they have a tendency to be the same as the old boss. And while The Who probably won’t weren’t talking about Mark Morris football on their classic rock and roll tale, if you squint through the rain it’s easy to see why the Monarchs may have found a new anthem just in time for the postseason.

On a night where the rain fell at a 45 degree angle and the grandstand at Longview Memorial Stadium was left half full while trick-or-treaters made their rounds, the Mark Morris football team embraced the run in a way few saw coming on the way to a 51-7 victory over R.A. Long in the Civil War.

The victory carried huge implications for the final 2A Greater St. Helens League standings. A loss to the Lumberjacks could have left Mark Morris in a precarious position with the postseason right around the corner. Instead, the Monarchs locked up the fourth seed out of the league while simultaneously wiping away R.A. Long’s hopes for some playoff football like a toddler’s arm across a chessboard.

Kenny Mullen Jr. was the star of the show for the Monarchs, piling up 232 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries. After switching jerseys mid-game and confusing a pileup of confusion in the press box, Mullen tallied his longest touchdowns in the second half with bruising runs of 32 and 21 yards.
