In some nearby, near-parallel timeline in the pigskin multiverse, Mark Morris and Woodland are still playing, still tied, going blow-for-blow, lurching into their 19th-or-something overtime, while Ridgefield yawns and waits for the Beavers in Week 9, the Greater St. Helens 2A League championship on the line.

The gateway to that fantasia stayed open for the first 24 minutes of a surprisingly taut Week 8 rumble at Longview Memorial Stadium on Friday.

The host Monarchs showed glimpses of the program they are becoming. Woodland, its shot at a league title assured regardless of the outcome in Longview, “got behind the chains” too often in the first half, according to head coach Glen Flanagan, and “kind of shot (itself) in the foot.”
