WOODLAND — The funny thing about winning a league title one year is that it doesn’t guarantee you anything the next. The Woodland football team heard about that little caveat and went ahead and took matters into their own hands this fall.
On Friday night the Beavers defeated a previously undefeated Ridgefield squad 14-7 at Beaver Stadium in order to clinch their first back-to-back league championships since 2007. Woodland led from wire to wire and looked every bit the superior team on the final day of the regular season, which must’ve been a shock to all the experts who picked the Spudders to win the 2A Greater St. Helens League title this season.
“As (defending) league champs, with a lot of guys returning, you’d think someone would’ve picked us but I don’t think they did,” Woodland head coach Glen Flanagan said. “They must’ve known we had a new coach, and he’s green.”
