SELAH – After flirting with an early elimination in the postseason the Woodland Beavers reconsidered their plans, then they snatched the keys and rolled all the way to the final day of the season. And while Woodland’s inspired run ended one-win shy of a trophy, it’s unlikely any team outside the State champions had a better time at Carlon Park than the Beavers.
Woodland defeated Ephrata 6-2 on Saturday morning at the 2A State Tournament, before nearly pulling off a comeback victory over Tumwater to reach the trophy round. The Beavers’ season came to an end with a dramatic 4-2 loss to those T-Birds just a few hours later, but not before they made one last valiant effort to upend the bracket.
“I woke up this morning and I thought, ‘Jeez, we’re one of the top eight teams in the state? We weren’t even supposed to make it,” Woodland coach Tom Christensen said. “We had nothing to lose. We were playing with house money.”
