ONALASKA — Toledo traveled to Onalaska with a chance to clinch the Central 2B football league’s east division title, but the Riverhawks couldn’t get anything going in the right direction as the Loggers won 40-0 to claim the league title.
The Riverhawks lost their first game of the season, and happened in the biggest game of the season so far. Toledo entered the contest ranked in the top-3 statewide, while the Loggers were seated sevaral positions behind the ‘Hawks in most polls.
So what went wrong for such a talented Toledo group? That’s up for debate.
“It’s hard to say right now. I’m a big film guy so I’ll have to watch film and see exactly what happened,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen said. “They were more physical than us. I got out-coached, it was across the board, they were just a better football team tonight.”
Does that mean the Riverhawks believe they’ll be outmatched the next time around should a rematch wind up in the cards in the postseason? Nope.
“I don’t think the score reflects how much better they are as a team overall, but it reflects how much better they were tonight,” Christensen said. “We’ve got a lot of things we have to adjust but I’ve got to do a better job of preparing my guys. Sometimes you need to get smacked in the mouth and hopefully that’s what we needed tonight and hopefully we can improve from it.”
