In a lot of ways, this season’s Greater St. Helens 3A league schedule aligns with the calendar turn into a new year. That is not to say it always lines up this way, but the main thing they both have in common on this lap around the sun is the symbolism of a clean slate that the new year provides.
On Tuesday on K-Court, both Kelso and their foes from Prairie brought sub .500 records into the league opener, but those records don’t matter much as the teams enter their league slate and cross the midway point of the season. The Hilanders had hopes of kicking off their 3A GSHL campaign with a home win over a tough opponent, however the visitors from Prairie used stifling defense and relentless pursuit on the offensive glass to quickly put Kelso in a hole it was unable to dig out of.
The end result for the Scots was a a 68-49 loss at Kelso High School. Carson Morningstar scored a game-high 24 points for Prairie, and Griffin Smith added 13 off the bench for the Falcons.
“I thought we showed our personality that we think we have — (It) came out tonight in places, but with that said we have to play a more complete thirty-two minutes,” said Kelso coach Joe Kinch. “I thought there were times tonight we really moved the ball well and got good shots, plus we only had five turnovers at the half.”
