KELSO — The Lassies would probably rather not see the Mountain View Thunder again this season. The leaders of the 3A Greater St. Helens League, who haven’t lost a league game yet kept that streak alive up in K-Town on Tuesday, traveling north and then delivering a 61-35 decision that halted Kelso’s three-game win streak in its tracks.

The main event in a boys/girls doubleheader, the contest was never in doubt as Mountain View jumped out to a 12-0 lead during the first quarter. That advantage grew to 23-5 with 2:59 left in the second quarter as the Lassies desperately searched for answers.

Freshman Maali Amrine provided a bit of the spark for Kelso off the bench with four points and three rebounds. However, the Thunder fully controlled the first 16 minutes and led 25-7 at intermission.

But to hold a high octane Mountain View side under 30 points in a half is an accomplishment in and of itself.

“I was encouraged with our defense in the first half…to hold them to 25,” Kelso head coach Andrew Johnson said. “But when you only have seven (points) you’re not going to win many games like that.”

After a few reminders and a lot of encouragement at halftime, Kelso was able to find some offense in the second half.
