LACEY — The Kelso softball team had to play with its back up against the wall on the opening day of the 3A bi-District III/IV Tournament. After falling 11-5 to Peninsula on Thursday morning at The Regional Athletic Complex, the Lassies fought their way out of the corner and lived to play another day with a 7-5 win over Heritage in a lunch time elimination contest.
The game against Heritage was a familiar assignment for the 3A Greater St. Helens League foes. But that didn’t make the task any easier.
“It was our third time playing them, and you know, as the old saying goes — it’s hard to beat a team three times,” Kelso coach Dean Sorensen said.
And that adage held true once again when Heritage took a two-run lead in the top of the first inning and put the the Lassies on notice. So what did Kelso do with its season on the line?
“We just started picking away at them,” Sorensen noted.
