LONG BEACH – The Naselle baseball team didn’t need a barrage of hits to get the job done Tuesday, instead leaning on timely execution and a dominant outing on the mound to secure a 6-2 win over Ilwaco in a Coastal Baseball matchup.

Under clear, calm conditions and bright sunshine over synthetic grass, both teams settled into a slower-paced game where execution — and perhaps effort — proved to be the difference.

“We were flat today. That’s unacceptable,” Ilwaco head coach Brett Hopkins said. “The energy just wasn’t where it needed to be.”

In a game where offense came at a premium, the Comets made the most of their opportunities while Leith Chadwick controlled the pace from the mound.

“We just stayed together and kept things moving,” Naselle’s Eli Gardner said.

Gardner provided a rare offensive highlight on the day with a home run to help the visitors come out on top.

“Even without a ton of hits, we found ways to string things together and get runs across,” Gardner added.

What Naselle lacked in volume at the plate, it made up for in execution. Despite just five hits, Naselle consistently found ways to move runners and capitalize on key moments.

Chadwick did the rest.
