WINLOCK — The Toledo baseball team took control early and never let up in a 21-0 win over Winlock on Monday at Winlock High School.

The Riverhawks broke the game open in the first inning, plating six runs to set the tone. They followed with two runs in the second, eight more in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth before closing it out in five innings due to the run rule.

“That first inning was huge,” Toledo’s Nico Acosta said. “No disrespect, but we kind of knew it was going to happen. We were glad it happened early so we could coast the rest of the game.”

Toledo’s offense produced throughout the lineup, consistently putting the ball in play with 18 hits on the day.

First-year Winlock head coach Colton Hawkins saw things from a slightly different angle. By his own count the Cardinals committed at least a dozen errors in the field during the opening innings, opening the door for a lopsided outcome in the Battle of the Cowlitz rivalry affair.

“We struggled a lot,” Hawkins said. “It was very self-inflicted.”

But defensive miscues aside, the Cardinals bats were unable to get anything going as Toledo’s Rohan Feigenbaum and Isaac Parmantier combined to toss a five-inning no-hitter.
