Clutch your pearls and cover your ears because if rumors floating around Bakamus Gymnasium this week wind up holding water the Civil War could look a whole lot different than the last time around.
Mark Morris played without the services of a handful of its regular rotation players in a blowout loss at home to Washougal in 2A Greater St. Helens League on Tuesday. The defeat did nothing to the Monarchs in the standings, but the conspicuous collection of unexplained absences left more questions than answers on the eve of Longview’s greatest rivalry game.
Several sources who wished to remain anonymous stated that several Monarchs are facing season-long suspensions for an undisclosed team incident. Whatever the cause, it’s clear that extenuating circumstances have left multiple players in doubt for Thursday’s regular season finale at home against R.A. Long.
A quick check of the box scores confirms that Mark Morris was missing six players, several of them starters, from its lineup on Tuesday. Two of those Monarchs were also inactive for a win over Hockinson last Thursday.
Calls and emails to the Mark Morris administration for further clarification on the alleged incident and subsequent disciplinary action were not returned prior to publication. Mark Morris head coach Ken Kelly has also been playing his cards close to the vest.
“We’ve been shorthanded the last couple of games,” Kelly acknowledged. “A variety of factors; hopefully we’ll be ready for the playoffs.”
