2A Prep Boys Basketball / Roundup

The R.A. Long and Woodland boys basketball teams might not have a lot in common, but they could both be playing for a District championship later this week and making travel arrangements for the state tournament if all goes according to plan Tuesday night.

The senior laden Lumberjacks and the youthful eager Beavers will be playing in the District semifinals for a spot in the title tilt, and the berth to the State Tournament that comes along with it, tonight after opening the 2A District IV Tournament with a pair of wins over the weekend.

R.A. Long put a pounding on Ridgefield on Saturday at the Lumberdome with a 67-38 victory in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Woodland survived a Valentine’s Day scare at home with a 52-50 win over W.F. West. The Beavers will host Tumwater tonight in the early semifinal affair, while the Lumberjacks will square off with Columbia River for the third time this season in the nightcap at Woodland High School.

R.A. Long had to endure double overtime on the road on the way to a three-point win in their first meeting with the Rapids back on Jan. 5, and the Jacks notched another three-point victory over Columbia River at home on Jan. 22. And you can be sure that R.A. Long head coach Jeray Key has pondered that old adage about beating a good team three times. It’s just that the 2A Greater St. Helens League Coach of the Year is not concerned with superstitions or any other wisdom pulled from the Farmer’s Almanac.

“When it comes down to playing a team three times…. that’s what the postseason is all about,” Key said.
