Prep Boys Basketball / Roundup

It’s a new season and it seems some things never change. But there is still plenty to ponder.

A red (and black) hot start by the R.A. Long Lumberjacks has fans remembering last year’s historic third place finish at the state tournament and wondering, what might be next? Things will certainly look different down on the block at Joe Moses Court after the Jacks lost last year’s All-League co-MVP to a knee injury in the offseason.

The Monarchs don’t have a first-year coach anymore but they’ve got plenty of first-year players and “dogfight” in the 2A GSHL looms. Mark Morris also has a new player waiting in the wings, but he’s currently limited to JV action due to the new WIAA transfer rules.

In a related matter, Kelso is missing a name fans were expecting to see back from last year’s roster, but the Hilanders aren’t talking about that. So far the Scotties have defended their home court successfully, and they’ll have a chance to let their actions speak for them Friday night when Mark Morris comes calling in a boys/girls doubleheader.

Meanwhile, Kalama, Winlock and Naselle have new coaches. But if you’ve been paying attention to high school hoops over the last decade, you’ll probably recognize their names with Kyle Randall, Adam Deck, and Blake Updike taking over sideline clipboard duty for the ‘Nooks, Cards, and Comets, respectively.

Oh, and Toledo still hasn’t had a full practice because 11/12ths of the team has been too busy trying to win a State championship on the gridiron. For those who don’t know, the Riverhawks are undefeated entering Saturday’s title tilt against Tri-Cities Prep at Husky Stadium.
