CHEHALIS – After colliding in the semifinals the Toledo and Ilwaco boys basketball teams have taken different paths during the 2A District IV Tournament, but both routes will lead to the state tournament.

The Riverhawks had to settle for second place in the Central 2B League, but they took down the Pacific 2B League Fishermen by a count of 67-58 on Wednesday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis. That victory snapped a 16-game win streak for Ilwaco, and notched Toledo’s ticket to the state tournament while also putting the ‘Hawks into the District championship game to face Napavine on Saturday.

“I’m glad to be the one to do it, especially to get into that District championship game,” Toledo head coach Grady Fallon said. “That was our goal.”

With its streak shattered, Ilwaco fell to the dark side of the bracket for an elimination contest against Rainier (WA) on Friday. The Fishermen found their footing in time to prevail 45-39 over the Mountaineers, setting up a date with Adna for third, while simultaneously locking down a berth in the state tournament.

“So excited for our boys, to end the year with a losing record last year and put the time in to get to where we are now,” said Ilwaco head coach Eric McMillan. “It’s a great feeling!”
