CASTLE ROCK – The only thing more dangerous through the air than the hometown Rockets was the real life thunder and lightning that ushered in an early end to Week 1 of the high school football season at The Rock. In front of an electric home crowd, Castle Rock used a precision air attack to come away with a resounding 35-8 victory over R.A. Long in a non-league gridiron tilt.
The contest was called off with less than four minutes remaining after game officials heard a thunder clap in the area. Some observers claim the noise actually originated from a boisterous Castle Rock student section, and nobody actually said they saw lightning. Still, the decision makers determined enough was enough and called the game early rather than sending the teams to their locker rooms for at least a 30-minute delay.
It was an understandable, if somewhat anti-climatic, resolution to a game that saw Castle Rock by 23 points at halftime, and held a 35-0 advantage after three quarters.
The history between the two programs has gone back and forth over the years, with Castle Rock now having the edge by winning the last two meetings. And this time, the Rockets did most of their damage via the passing game.
“I thought they would have made some adjustments, but they really wanted to sell out to stop the run – which is to be expected,” said Castle Rock head coach Cody Warner. “I didn't come in expecting to call 20 passes, but you always take what you can get.”
