RAINIER — The return of the Highway 30 Hootenanny left roughly half the fans in attendance disappointed, but that’s the nature of rivalry games. But the stars in Columbia County sparkled a little bit brighter for the Tigers on Friday night after they came to Rainier and claimed a 45-28 win over their rivals.
The contest was the first-ever 9-man rendition of Hootenanny, and doubled as the 2A Special District 1 opener for both teams. And there was no dearth of big hits on both sides.
“We always know, playing Rainier, you’re not going to win if you don’t match the physicality,” Clatskanie head coach Sean Gorley said. “I don’t care what offense they run, it’s always going to be physical, so it was good to see us come out and match that.”
The victory made Clatskanie 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2016, and just the third time since 2000.
Lucas Andreasen rushed for 258 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries to lead the Clatskanie offense. That effort included a 55-yard jaunt for his longest run of the night, and numerous highlight reel breakaways.
“The outside runs worked really well, but the inside runs I would cut back and it was money every time,” Andreasen said.
