HAZEL DELL — One could say the Kalama Chinooks might have been a little ticked off after losing their two non-league games by a combined 10 points to open the 2025 season.

Well, all of those frustrations, angsts, dissatisfactions, grievances, disgruntlements, vexations and any other relative synonyms a thesaurus can muster were taken out on the home turf of the King’s Way Christian Knights in the 1A Trico League opener Friday.

Kalama used a 29-point second quarter en route to a 51-14 victory that featured a winning coaching staff’s favorite game mode: a running clock.

And on a sunny late, late, late summer evening the King’s Way’s players and coaches seemed to prefer to exorcise their annoyances on the zebras than on the action between the hashmarks. All the while, the Chinooks were asserting their dominace early and often, in no small part thanks to strong play in the trenches.

“Up front on offense they played great. Very proud of the offensive line,” Kalama head coach Mike Phelps said.

And prep football fans only need to look at the scoreboard to confirm the ‘Nooks were winning the pushing contest on both sides of the ball.

“They’ve got some really good athletes. I honestly don’t know how we kept them from scoring more points,” Phelps added. “Our defense played very well, made tackles when we needed to, didn’t give up a ton of big plays, a few here and there. Pretty happy about how the boys up front played.”

And the ‘Nooks in shoulder pads felt the same way.
