CHINOOK STADIUM — The homecoming festivities in Kalama hit a snag on Friday night when Stevenson packed up its bags and jumped on the bus at halftime. Just moments after a king and queen were announced to an electric pink student section at Chinook Stadium, another, more announcement came across the PA system — the game is over, please drive home safely.
“Their numbers were short. (Their coach) explained to me that they would have had to put six more freshman on the field,” Kalama head coach Mike Phelps said. “And their quarterback, who looked awful healthy to me, because he was running all over the place on us — I guess he was playing concussed… and their running back was hurt too.”
So, that was that.
Sure, the ‘Noooks emerged victorious, and healthy, from the 32-0 win over the Bulldogs in 1A Trico League play. But there was more football to be played, and Kalama has been having a lot of fun doing that lately.
For 24 minutes of game time in Week 5 the ‘Nooks were able to keep on rolling. After starting the season with a pair of one-possession losses, Kalama has now rattled off three league wins in a row and made it look easy every time.
Quarterback Henry Sigfridson once again led the Kalama offense, but he made sure to share the ball with his friends, too. Sigfridson completed 12 of 14 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns without being intercepted. He also ran four times for 72 yards and a touchdown, and connected with six different receivers when he chose to throw the ball.
“Our offense is definitely moving. We’re getting everybody involved and throwing the ball to both sides of the field,” Phelps said. “Early on I think we might have had some blinders on for the other side of the field… It’s nice that we’re spreading the ball around on offense.”
