LAULAINEN STADIUM — It’s easy to look at the final play of a run-off victory in overtime and quickly assign hero status the guy who scored the touchdown. And to that end, let’s be quick to give Kelso running back Kainoa Fili his flowers — for it was Fili who powered through the Federal Way defense for a three-yard game-winning touchdown run to give the Scotties a 13-10 win over Federal Way last Friday in their playoff opener at Schroeder Field.
But what makes Fili, and so many of his teammates so special, is the fact that they bring it on both sides of the ball week after week, game after game, play after play. And when the situation calls for it, a guy like Fili is more than willing to go above and beyond — spitting, scratching, and screaming — until the final horn has blown.
“Kaino is that perfect high school matchup of size, athleticism and mentality,” first-year Kelso head coach Darin Gardner said. “He has an unbelievable motor and he has a sense of when we need a big play, whether that’s offensively or defensively.”
