MEMORIAL STADIUM – Coach Peck was as happy as a homecoming king on Friday night after leading Mark Morris to a 25-7 win over Hockinson. It just wasn’t the Coach Peck you would were probably expecting.
The Monarchs had assistant coach Larry Peck filling as head honcho on Friday night while his son, Mike, who was serving a one-game suspension after being ejected at Ridgefield last week. The ejection was appealed, but the suspension stuck. And, right or wrong, it created a Disney Movie plot line to pair with the regular homecoming festivities in the 2A Greater St. Helens League victory.
“He’s the future. I’m the past. And I’m just ecstatic that I got one more night in my career – being able to step up and cover for him is really special to me,” Peck said. “I never expected to be the head coach for another game, but I got one more shot at it, so I’m excited!”
And like any half decent plot line, the hometown Monarchs looked like they were going to run away with things right up until the plot twist.
Mark Morris marched down the field on its first drive of the contest, only to turn the ball over on downs inside the 10-yard line. But the hosts got the ball back quickly and made a habit out of living in the red zone.
