THE STADIUM — The R.A. Long Lumberjacks were hoping for a spark on homecoming night, but Columbia River made sure that bolt out of the black never arrived. Instead, the Rapids rolled to a 48-0 win over the Jacks at Longview Memorial Stadium and forgot to return the game ball when they were done with it.
The Jacks sent their cross-country team around the track to the other side of the field to retrieve that pigskin, or at least that’s what sources say. But that didn’t stop Columbia River from handing R.A. Long their fifth straight loss to open the season.
Columbia River Senior Savion McCoy turned in a standout performance, racking up more than 200 all-purpose yard and scoring four touchdowns. McCoy broke free for several big plays, both on the ground and on special teams, leading the Rapids’ scoring spree.
And despite at least several valiant efforts, the Jacks once again could not figure out how to stop the onslaught.
“The kids fought hard tonight,” R.A. Long head coach Jon Barker explained. “They fought hard and kept fighting all throughout this one. (It was a) Goonies never-say-die mentality from our seniors.”
