Rainier quarterback Brian Wachs (16) threw just one pass the entire game, but he made it a doozy by hooking up with Dave Lefebvre for the game-winning touchdown in a 13-12 win over Astoria to capture the Cowapa League title, Nov. 6, 1993. / Photo courtesy of Rainier football

OSAA High School Football / History

Have you ever stopped to ponder about what a Columbian really is?

It stands to reason we all are Columbians in The Blast Zone, considering we live along the that big ol’ river that lends its name to the Rainier High School mascot.

But it’s a riverboat captain, right? Someone who knows how to navigate this particular waterway. Perhaps there was time when there were Columbians and Mississippians and Missourians, discreetly separated from the demonym of the people who live in those states.

But this is guess work, because as far as any of us are concerned a Columbian is an athlete from Rainier. And those Columbians, with their State championships and their infamous high horsepower offenses, are the next subject of our examination into local quarterback mythologies.
