Tigers sink Vikings in foggy playoff opener
The Clatskanie football team continued its historic run through the competition this season with a 22-20 win over Colton at home on Dick Manick Field, Friday, in the opening round of the 2A OSAA playoffs.
It was the Tigers’ first win in the state tournament since 2019. But even if you were there, you probably only saw half of the action.
“If the play was going to the opposite sideline we just had to wait to find out what happened because we couldn’t see anything. The fog was just too thick,” Clatskanie head coach Sean Gorley said.
Even after notching an undefeated regular season and the 2A Special District 1 league title, the No. 5 ranked Tigers knew they were going to be in for a test against the No. 12 Vikings. Just last year Colton got the best of Clatskanie (70-22), and another wave of classical late fall weather only conspired to make things more difficult on the hosts.
“We felt we matched up with them fairly well,” Gorley noted. “We thought they were pretty similar to us with dynamic playmakers on the ball.”
