Hilanders share the load, secure league title on homecoming

The Kelso football team had to do things a little differently last Friday, but the game plan worked like a charm in a 40-7 win over Mountain View. That victory clinched the 3A Greater St. Helens League title for the Hilanders, and got homecoming weekend started on the right foot.

One week after losing starting quarterback Anders Dahl and starting lineman Parker Stewaert to injuries, Kelso was forced to put new people in new places, without suffering any dropoff in returns.

In fact, it was the first time Kelso has defeated Mountain View by more than 10 points since 2009. What’s more, it was the first time the Scotties defeated the Thunder in back-to-back seasons since 1999-2000.

All told, the Hilanders gained 367 total yards and 16 first downs. Meanwhile the Thunder put up just 178 total yards and eight first downs. Kelso led by 40 points in the fourth quarter before allowing a score.
