Hilanders smack Shelton; secure home playoff game

The Kelso football team completed a perfect run through the 3A Greater St. Helens League last week with a 38-7 win at Shelton. The victory was enough to earn the Hilanders a home playoff game from the WIAA seeding committee over the weekend.

The Scotties went to Shelton and put up 374 yards of offense, split pretty evenly between passing (179 yards) and rushing (195 yards). Meanwhile, the Steel Kilt defense held the Highclimbers to just 192 total yards, split even more evenly between the air (95 yards) and ground (97 yards).

Kelso has now played Shelton twice since 1996, defeating the Highclimbers a combined 80-7 over the last two seasons.

Kelso’s Kaino Fili rushed for a 10-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. And then Jordan Erickson intercepted a pass and returned it 25-yards to the house to spoil the Highclimbers’ opening drive.

“We talked about wanting to start quick,” first-year Kelso head coach Darin Gardner said. “We saw some pretty good league opponents go up there and struggle and it really seemed like a tough place to play.”

But the Hilanders just kept on disproving, or at least overcoming, any supernatural forces at play in Mason County on Halloween.
