Toledo scorches Adna in season opener

TOLEDO — Some folks would say the most wonderful thing about the beginning of football season is that it overlaps with the end of baseball season. And with that in mind, Toledo made like Nuke Laloosh and announced its presence with authority with a 51-26 season-opening win over Adna, Friday, at Hippi Stadium.

The Riverhawks were on a heater all night, but nobody had a better showing than senior wide receiver Adam Kruger who hauled in four touchdown passes from Eli Weeks in the historic victory.

“It was a fun game to watch and a fun game to play in, especially if you’re from Toledo,” said Toledo coach Mike Christensen.

That outburst led to Toledo’s highest point total in a Week 1 game in more than seven decades. The previous record was set in 1954 when the Cheese Town players defeated the Washington State Training School by a score of 53-0. The WSTS was renamed Green Hill in 1972. That’s right, the beleaguered correctional facility alongside the freeway in Chehalis.

Not only that, but the Riverhawks’ output was the most any team in The Blast Zone has scored in a season opener since 2021 when Kalama defeated Woodland 57-20 in the 8-Mile War.

“We didn’t go super deep (into the playbook) but we had some things dialed up that hit big when we went to them,” Christensen said.
