Belvin, good bounces, send Beavers over Rapids

Woodland was able to hold on for a 17-14 win at Columbia River on Friday in 2A Greater St. Helens League play. The win simultaneously threw water all over the Rapids’ homecoming plans, while also serving to shake up the league standings.
A bounding punt by Woodland’s Michael Belvin bounced and rolled for 66 yards with three minutes left in the contest, and left River pinned all the way down at its own four-yard line. From there, the Beavers’ defense simply had to hold on.
And Woodland was up to the task, forcing a turnover on downs with consecutive tackles for losses to clinch the game. The victory also left the Beavers with a path forward as they attempt to win their third straight 2A GSHL title.
“This was huge,” Belvin, the Beavers’ quarterback and middle linebacker (and punter), told The Columbian. “We knew if we lost this game there was no shot at a league title. And winning this game … people know us now. It was a really big win.”
