Editor’s Notes: The Highway 30 Hootenanny will make its long awaited return to Columbia County tonight when the Rainier Columbians host the Clatskanie Tigers for a traditional clash of next-town neighbors.

Rainier has dominated the most recent history of the matchup, which led to a quiet dissolution of the annual rivalry contest after the 2021 season. The Columbians have gone 13-8 against the Tigers since Y2K, with a seven game win streak between 2007-13. That run also includes a 50-8 win in the spring of 2021 (because covid) that featured just eight players one each side, and a 20-14 win in overtime in 2012.

Now, Columbia County’s Greatest Rivalry is back, but with one little change — this year the teams will be playing 9-man football. We previewed both teams during summer camp, and Rainier is 1-1 so far this season, while Clatskanie is 2-0. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Rainier High School.
