Prep Football / Rankings

The brain trust at the combined headquarters of N2/Blast Zone Media had a lot to talk about while determining the order of how our fifth edition of rankings should look after the first five weeks of the high school football season. What that really means is that we got distracted talking about baseball in October for our beloved Seattle Mariners and what it means to be a fan literally entrenched inside T-Mobile Park.

It also turns out that it is still a challenge to actually watch the game on TV or otherwise. Apparently, there is a right way to be a proper Mariners consumer these days. We thought the days of the regional sports blackouts were long gone, but here we are in 2025 struggling to figure out which additional package needs to be purchased in order to be in line with society norms. In the land where the sophisticated, fit in, we do not. [R.I.P. Streamest]

But at least the radio still works. Not the app, mind you. The honest to goodness twist-the-broken-knob, tin foil on the antenna AM radio. You just have to be north of Castle Rock.

Luckily, after determining our collective path to follow along with the M’s (and changing a whole bunch of diapers), we managed to discuss all the important things related to prep football, of course.

We talked all about the four-game losing streak Napavine is currently riding after a 28-12 loss to Adna. Turns out, the Pirates might be pretty good! Word also got back to us that Toledo once again scored touchdowns at an alarming rate against Mossyrock, further solidifying their position in the powe rankings — which Cheese Town has had on lock from the start.

We even heard Mark Morris got their first win of the season at Hudson’s Bay in the early game at Kiggins Bowl. And rumor around The Bargain Market is that betting on the Monarchs paid decent last week. Not that anyone would do that. And Woodland proved the difference between contenders and pretenders last week with a blitzkrieg pop performance against Hockinson.

The games we individually covered were freshest on our minds and those took place at the two “K’s” in the cover area — Kelso and Kalama.

The Hilanders extended their home winning streak over Evergreen (rapidly approaching 20 years) after running all over the Plainsmen 35-22. It was a fitting result on a night when The Laulainen Family were honorary co-captains at Laulainen Stadium. The Scotties ran on first down, second down, and yes, third down as well. It was the type of comforting game that every Kelso alum can envision having watched over and over throughout their lifetime.

Kalama’s game had a storyline as well, but for completely different reasons. The Chinooks were on the brink of running clock territory against Stevenson when the homecoming halftime festivities began. And the ‘Nooks owned a 32-0 victory by the time the king and queen had been announced after the visiting Bulldogs opted to call it quits. It was a disappointing finish for everyone involved, but Kalama will try to make last week’s short work payoff during a visit to Seton Catholic on Friday.

There were a few more results from last week’s games that deserve your attention. Like Wahkiakum and Naselle laying wasted to their foes again, while Clatskanie rolled to yet another win in Oregon Country. So let’s get on with ranking some teams and their respective leagues to see who’s up and who’s down on gridirons across this blasted land.
