NASELLE — The Km Trophy took a short trip over its namesake mountain on Friday night after Wahkiakum put the screws to the Comets, 54-10, in a 1B Southwest Washington League football contest in South Pacific County.
The rivalry game, better known as the Battle for Km Mountain, returned to the docket last season after the Mules dropped down for a return to the 1B ranks. Naselle won last year’s matchup 72-6 in Cathlamet, so Wahkiakum was motivated to avenge that result. And the Mules choose to mount their uprising through controlled violence on the gridiron.
“This is a good, strong opponent for us and we knew this was going to be a tough game going in to it,” Wahkiakum coach Ryan Lorenzo said. “We got everybody fired up and everybody was locked in today. They did their job a lot… more than they needed to. And we got the Km Trophy back.”
Wahkiakum quarterback Jayden Stoddard led the attack on enemy turf by tallying seven touchdowns and 412 total yards in the victory. He threw four touchdowns, ran in three more, and led the Mules to successful point-after conversions on all but one attempt.
For all intents and purposes, Wahkiakum simply imposed its will and kept the pressure on until time had run out.
“I made a promise to everyone that we were going to win,” Stoddard said. “I was not going to be denied a victory tonight, and I kept my word.”
