The Kelso girls basketball team punched its ticket to the 3A State Tournament earlier this week, and now it’s time to go play pride, positioning, and a little white piece of net.
The Lassies had to withstand a furious surge by Prairie in order to come away with a 53-46 victory at home in a 3A District IV semifinal on Wednesday.
That victory advanced Kelso to the District title game for a Friday night date on the road against Evergreen with the District championship on the line.
“We’re feeling good. Right now the nice thing is that being in the District champions game has us a guaranteed chance to go to State,” said Kelso head coach Andrew Johnson.
Johnson, who was voted 3A Greater St. Helens League Coach of the Year by his peers, knows the work isn’t done yet, though.
“We know this is an important game,” Johnson said of the District title tilt against the 3A GSHL champions from Evergreen. “We know the outcome of this game will determine where we wind up in the seeding. It will determine who we play, and where we have to travel. We know where we stack up, but we’ve got to go prove it.”
