The Kelso girls basketball team will have to do its best impression of Cinderella if it wants to get all the way to the big dance. The Lassies were ranked No. 20 by the WIAA seeding committee on Sunday, putting them far to the left on the 3A State Tournament bracket that they’ll have to win a pair of loser-out games this just to advance to the double-elimination stages at the Tacoma Dome.
That news came less than 48 hours after Kelso dropped the 3A District IV championship game 64-41 to the league champion Plainsmen on their home floor at Evergreen High School. The Lassies played that game shorthanded, but should be back to full strength as they try to turn a pumpkin into a stagecoach this week.
“While the result wasn’t what we hoped for, this group should hold their heads high,” Kelso head coach Andrew Johnson said. “The growth they showed, the way they represented our program, and the path they took to get here is something to be proud of.”
