The Mark Morris and Woodland girls basketball teams will be battling for a spot in the 2A District IV girls basketball championship game on Monday night after picking up big wins late last week in the quarterfinal round.
Both teams took full advantage of their home court setting in their playoff openers on Thursday. Mark Morris, the 2A GSHL champion and owner of the No. 1 seed, took out Washougal 57-20. And Woodland, the No. 2 seed from the south, got away from Tumwater late with a 58-47 victory.
Now the Monarchs and Beavers stand just one win away from clinching a berth in the District title tilt, but it won’t be easy to get there. Woodland will play W.F. West, the No. 1 seed from the 2A EvCo, in the semis, while Mark Morris will face off with Black Hills.
The Bearcats are a perennial problem for almost every team they play. And Black Hills has proven to be an even peskier opponent this season than they were last year when they also faced off with the Monarchs at the district tournament.
“They’re real physical. This year they’re playing a ton of zone,” Atkins said. “Bigger guards have been a problem for us this year because we’re not the biggest team.”
