WOODLAND – In a world where the only constant is change, the Mark Morris and Woodland girls basketball teams continue to deliver the goods each time they square off.
That 2A Greater St. Helens League rivalry, which ended in a winner-to-State rubber match in the district tournament last season, lived up to its reputation on Thursday night when the visiting Monarchs were able to escape The Den with a 50-46 win over the Beavers.
The Monarchs carry lofty expectations this season and securing redemption against Woodland is certainly a box to be checked on their to-do list. But while Mark Morris returns a loaded core of rotation players, the Beavers lost their two-time All-Area Player of the Year in the post when Kennedy Bockert transferred to Skyview in the offseason.
And still, all it took for the Monarchs to leave the ol’ Forest City with a victory and a smile was a half-court buzzer beater, an NBA range three-pointer in the final minute, and a series of back-to-back-to-back connections from three different girls in baby blue. Because no matter how you shake things up, Mark Morris and Woodland are bound to make things interesting any time they cross paths on the hardwood.
“This was kind of the barometer because River and Mark Morris are sort of the consensus teams to battle for a league championship,” Woodland head coach Glen Flanagan said. “But I like what our kids do and I like our chances.”
