The Toutle Lake girls basketball team knew it was in for a hard road in the Regional round of the 2B State Tournament as soon as they saw the game was going to be played all the way up and over in Omak.
Not to mention the No. 6 ranked Fighting Ducks were matched up with No. 3 Brewster. But the Toutle gang resolved itself to embrace the road trip, intent to make some memories and hopefully upset the balance in the bracket.
But momentum shifted from fifth gear to second (metaphorically speaking, and otherwise) when the Toutle Lake bus began to have mechanical issues on the way down the east side of White Pass. All of a sudden, figuring out what to do about the Bruins became this whole other ball of wax — for later. Much, much later.
After limping their broken bus down the road a bit the Ducks were loaned a new bus by Naches High School, and after some swapping out of basketballs and assorted team gear, the East Cowlitz County hoopers were back on the road. All told, the Regional road trip took a mere 8.5 hours. One way.
But even a defeat, and life in the slow lane, wasn’t enough to keep these Ducks down for long.
“It was a fun trip other than a little too much seat time,” TL head coach Daren Dean said. “We played good, but Brewster is a top team. And we’re right there.”
