YAKIMA — The Comets rolled into the 1B State Softball Tournament carrying a heap of confidence to go with their assorted team baggage and have proved their mettle at every turn.
After winning a league title and a District title and looking good along the way, Naselle was slotted No. 7 to the state tournament by the WIAA seeding committee. In retrospect it was, if not a slight, at least an egregious oversight by the powers that be.
“I don’t get the RPI,” Naselle head coach Bekah Wirkkala said following seeing the state bracket for the first time. “Obviously the east side is good, but I just don’t know if there’s a good way to compare our teams before we actually play each other.”
The comparisons can now be made. Naselle opened up the tournament with a 12-1 win over No. 10 Quilcene on Thursday at the Gateway Sports Complex, and followed up with a 7-6 victory over No. 2 ranked Sunnyside Christian in extra innings on Friday.
The Comets are now slated to play for a state championship after downing No. 6 ranked Colton by a score of 11-8 on Saturday morning.
