MM sweeps Hawks, places 3rd at Thunder Invite
Mark Morris has been making all the right moves to get back in the groove and climb back into the thick of the 2A Greater St. Helens League race. After suffering a mini-swoon in recent weeks, the Monarchs took down Hockinson in a heated league battle last Thursday and then placed third in the Mountain View Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
“We played hard today and found ways to execute,” Mark Morris head coach Carmen Hewitt said.
Over the weekend the Monarchs lost to Cheney (17-25, 10-25), but bounced back to defeat the hosts from Mountain View (25-18, 25-17) and Washougal (27-26, 25-19) in point-limited pool play action.
Then in bracket play Mark Morris defeated Union (25-21, 24-26, 15-12), before falling to Cheney (21-25, 19-25) again in the semifinals. Mark Morris finished strong with a one-set win over Skyview (25-17) in the bronze medal match.
Seton Catholic defeated Cheney for the tournament championship. Other teams in attendance included King’s Way, Washougal, Heritage and Evergreen.
“We needed to prove to ourselves that we could play with great teams,” Hewitt explained. “This tournament was great for our mental toughness. We are looking forward to translating this momentum to league play.”
