The problem with building a relationship with perfection is that people start to have high expectations, and sometimes those expectations can be exceedingly difficult to meet.

Some would say impossible. Just ask the Red Devils.

After beginning the season with nine straight shutout wins the Lower Columbia women’s soccer team set the bar higher than the entrance to Saint Peter’s Club. So when they finally lost in a 2-1 contest to Clark earlier this month it was striking not only because the Red Devils had been defeated, it was also jarring due to the simple fact that the other team finally managed to put a counting stat in the box score.

And then in their follow contest the Red Devils managed to bounce back with a 4-2 win over Highline, but it just didn’t feel the same with two tallies for the other team on the score sheet.

So when LCC went up to Centralia on Wednesday afternoon and got back to its stingy ways with a 3-0 win over the Trailblazers on Bob Peters Field, it was a relief to some. But it provided no heartburn relief for the Red Devils themselves.

Just ask the man calling the shots for the No. 3 ranked team in the NWAC coaches poll.

“I’m probably a hard person to play for because every time they feel like they’ve hit the mark I move the needle,” LCC coach Joe Chicks said. “Our postgame conversation today was — we can be better.”
