LAULAINEN STADIUM — Kelso had plenty to play for Friday night and represented all concerned parties well with a 36-29 comeback victory over Bremerton in a non-league football affair.

The Hilanders were in their black jerseys in honor of alumni Deputy DeRosier, who was killed in the line of duty. And a moment of silence was also held in honor of former head coach Ed Laulainen. And yes, the stadium the game was played in front of named after Laulainen, who led Kelso to a State title in 1983 and died last week.

The Scots made things interesting for the home fans who turned out. Kelso fell behind by a single point with less than sixty seconds before halftime and trailed 22-14 in the fourth quarter before rallying to take the final lead in the last twenty seconds of action.

“I think this team does have that in them. There’s no panic out of this group,” first-year Kelso head coach Darin Gardner said. “When you can play emotion the right way and let it be a big motivator, instead of something that’s detrimental to yourself or your teammates, you’re going to be in a lot of high school football games.”

Quarterback Anders Dahl capped the comeback for the Hilanders with a pair of touchdowns in crunch time. That included a five-yard scamper with just 19 seconds left on the clock in the game.

Dahl ran for 91 yards on 12 carries. His first touchdown went for 23 yards with 4:34 left on the clock.

But Mason Hanson sparked the rally with a highlight reel dash down the sideline that included a hurdle over a diving defender. That run went for a 64-yard touchdown and brought all of Kelso back to life.

Hanson rushed for 234 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. His first score went for 12-yards early in the first quarter.

Parker Stewart ushered in the victory with a game-ending sack.
