MEMORIAL STADIUM — The Kelso Hilanders made their forefathers proud by rolling into Longview and leaving with a 19-6 win over Mark Morris, Friday, Sept. 5. in Week 1 of the prep football season.

The victory for the Scots spoiled what was supposed to be a special night for their foes. The contest doubled as a night of celebration for the hosts after the second round of renovations to Longview Memorial Stadium were completed over the summer. The updates included a facelift to the ticketing booth and main entrance, lot of new paint, some new bolts to keep the press box from falling off the top of the grandstand, locker room updates, and even some baby blue banners along the back side of the stadium to greet fans as they arrive.

But those flags did not immediately equate to success for the Monarchs at their shared home. Instead, Kelso took a 19-point lead over the first 15 minutes and never allowed the home side to get back in the game.

Kelso’s Mason Hanson ran for two touchdowns and a game-high 128 yards on 21 touches. The highlight of the night for the Scots was a 58-yard touchdown run down the near sideline by Hanson on a classic triple option. Quarterback Anders Dahl picked up the first 10 yards with his feet, then pitched the ball on a high arching parabola to Hanson who made a few defenders miss and scampered the rest of the way to pay dirt.
