LAULAINEN STADIUM — The Hilanders punched their ticket to the 3A state tournament in dramatic fashion Friday night with a 13-10 win in overtime over Federal Way at home on Schroeder Field.
A defensive showcase for both sides, Kelso went the duration of regulation without an offensive score. But the Steel Kilt was up to the task when it came to slowing down an explosive bunch of Eagles, and Kainoa Fili delivered the knockout blow with the game-winning three-yard touchdown run to end the contest.
“That’s two really-really physical football teams,” first-year Kelso head coach Darin Gardner said. “And when two really physical football teams that cover and tackle well play in a Week 10 game these are the kinds of outcomes, these are the kind of scores you’re going to see.”
