BIG K COURT — The R.A. Long boys basketball team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2A State Tournament with a 49-38 victory over No 7 Grandview in the Regional round on Saturday at Kelso High School.

The No. 2 ranked Lumberjacks fell behind early and had to scramble to get back in the game before halftime. And, of course, defense was right at the heart of the turnaround.

Last week in the District title game the Lumberjacks held Tumwater to just 13 points before holding on for dear life in the second half on the way to victory. This time around the Jacks allowed just 16 points in the second half of their win, turning the tables on the Greyhounds and keeping their undefeated season intact.

And while that turnaround began before halftime, the Lumberjacks got an ear full from their head coach at halftime.

“It really just started when (coach) Jeray started yelling at us,” RAL senior Josh Crane said. “I don’t really know what he was talking about, but I got the message and that was just to keep playing hard and execute.”

Crane went on to score a game-high 20 points in the victory, helping Key to pass former former head coach Kyle Fowler for the most wins all-time on the R.A. Long sideline.
