THE LUMBERDOME — It had been a decade since the Mark Morris girls basketball team had claimed a league title, but after Friday’s 64-22 win over R.A. Long in the Civil War at The Lumberdome, the Monarchs officially added another accolade for the wall of baby blue banners that hang above their home court.

The rivalry win clinched an outright 2A Greater St. Helens League championship for Mark Morris. And the victory helped the Monarchs wash a bad taste out of their mouth after losing “a stinker” at Washougal earlier in the week.

“Felt good to get back on track after Wednesdays poor offensive showing,” MM head coach Sean Atkins said.

Meanwhile, the Lumberjills saw their season come to an end on their own home floor, putting to bed a season that included just a single win. But R.A. Long battled from tipoff to the final horn, providing a glimpse of the grit that enabled the Jills to embrace the grind and complete their long lap around the track.

“Just like all season long, my girls played hard from start to finish regardless of the score against a very good MM team,” RAL head coach JD Ott said. “I am so proud of them for never giving up in a game during this tough season.”
