THE STADIUM — The Mark Morris Monarchs picked up their eighth consecutive victory in the Civil War, Friday night with a 36-0 victory over R.A. Long, and also managed to snag a playoff spot in the process.
The outcome was mostly decided by halftime, when the Monarchs took a 29 point lead into the locker room.
Deker Bartell led the Monarchs on both sides of the ball with a receiving touchdown, a rushing touchdown, and two interceptions. His first score came on the first offensive play of the night for Mark Morris when he took a short pass from quarterback Aaron Ibarreta, made two would-be tacklers miss on the near sideline, and then scooted the rest of the way for an 88-yard touchdown.
Bartell finished the game with a game-high 94 yards rushing on four carries. His touchdown on the ground went for 63 yards. Bartell aslo caught three passes for 96 yards, and that tone-setting touchdown.
But with their playoff hopes dangling in the wind, other Monarchs were also instrumental in locking down the win.
Kevin Hernandez Ruiz rushed eight times for 57 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Lane Smith rushed nine times for 56 yards and the final touchdown of the game.
And behind center, Ibarreta completed 7 of 11 passes for one touchdown
