Fishermen fend off Adna in extras in District title tilt
CHEHALIS – Down to their final three outs and trailing by three runs in the 2B District IV championship game, the Fishermen never panicked. In fact, Ilwaco head baseball coach Bret Hopkins had the wherewithal to glance down at his watch to check his pulse and says it never rose about 60 some beats per minute.
“My heart does not react to it anymore. I’ve become numb to it,” Hopkins said.
That’s what happens when your team rallies for three come-from-behind victories in the postseason on the way to the first District championship in the history of Ilwaco baseball.
So when his Fishermen came from behind one more time for a 7-4 win over Adna in 9-innings on Saturday night at W.F. West High School, the skipper from Ilwaco was overjoyed, but he wasn’t the least bit surprised.
“This may be a shock to the rest of the world, but not to us,” Hopkins said
